How to get from Auckland Airport (AKL) to downtown Auckland

This article deals with how to get from AKL Airport (Auckland International Airport) to Auckland CBD using ground transportation.

I flew in from Hobart with Air New Zealand on my most recent trip and care a lot about speed versus cost, so the best value option (for me) is SkyDrive (not sponsored!).

SkyDrive: My Recommended Option

Simply the best way to get from Auckland Airport to the city centre is the SkyDrive express shuttle service. SkyDrive has direct transfers between both the Domestic and International Terminals at Auckland Airport and SkyCity in Central Auckland.

This worked for me as that's where my hotel was. Consider another option if you're staying outside of the CBD.

One-way fare from AKL to downtown with SkyDrive is $20 NZD.

Key Features of SkyDrive

• Express and Direct Service: SkyDrive takes the fastest route via the North Western Motorway and the Waterview Tunnel.
• Frequent Departures: Buses run every 30 minutes throughout the day.
• Stops: SkyDrive picks up passengers directly outside the Domestic Terminal at Door 4 and the International Terminal at Door 8. This could not have been easier once I'd cleared immigration and customs at AKL. The central Auckland stop is on the Hobson Street side of the SkyCity complex.
• Pricing: At $20NZD, tickets are about what you'd expect for a typical airport-city service.

How to Buy SkyDrive Tickets

• Purchase tickets directly from the driver using a card (I did this).
• Buy online through the SkyDrive website and receive a QR code to scan from your phone.
• SkyDrive tickets are valid only for the booked date, but you can reschedule up to 24 hours before departure.

Luggage and Accessibility

• There are no strict luggage restrictions, so you can bring as much as you need. The drivers will assist with stowing your bags.
• SkyDrive allows people with service dogs, and kids under 4 travel free.

Travel Time

• The journey takes approximately 40 minutes, but it's wise to allow extra time during peak hours (8 AM-10 AM and 3 PM-6 PM).

Taxi from Auckland Airport to Downtown

If you prefer a more private mode of transport, taxis are readily available at Auckland Airport. Taxis can be picked up outside the arrivals area at Door 8 of the International Terminal and at the Jetstar forecourt at the Domestic Terminal.

Taxis make financial sense if you're not staying in the CBD, or you want to get going asap, or you're sharing with a friend/family member.

Taxi from AKL to downtown is $70-90 NZD.

Cost and Travel Time

• Expect to pay between $75 and $90 NZD, depending on traffic and the time of day.
• The journey usually takes around 30 minutes but can take longer during peak hours.

Flat Rate Options

• Some taxi companies offer flat-rate fares to the city center, so it's worth asking about this option when booking.

Rideshares: Uber is your only option

Uber is the main ride-sharing app used in Auckland and it's pretty popular for transfers to downtown Auckland. Note that Zoomy and Ola no longer operate in the city.

One-way fare from AKL to downtown with Uber is typically $45-60 NZD.

Pickup Locations

• Rideshare pickups are located at the designated rideshare areas: behind the big car park at the Domestic Terminal and outside Door 11 at the International Terminal.

Pricing

• Rideshare fares typically range from $45 to $60 NZD, depending on surge pricing and traffic.

Public Transport: Train-Bus Combo

For budget-conscious travellers, Auckland's public transport system has an economical (if very slightly circuitous) route to the city centre.

One-way fare from AKL to downtown by public transport is $7.80 NZD.

Route

• Step 1: Take the AirportLink bus from the Domestic or International Terminal to Puhinui Train Station. The bus operates every 10 minutes from 4:30 AM to 12:40 AM daily.
• Step 2: Catch a train from Puhinui Station to Britomart, the main transport hub in Auckland's CBD.

Cost

• The total cost for this journey is around $7.80 NZD with an AT HOP card, which you can purchase at the airport.

Travel Time

• The entire journey typically takes about an hour.

Essential items to pack for solo travel

• Men's Waterproof jacket

Shuttle Services

Shuttle services are another option, if - frankly - one I almost never use any more because they can have multiple drop-offs and take much longer to reach your hotel or hostel.

One-way fare from AKL to downtown by shuttle is $35 NZD.

Cost

• Prices start at around $35 NZD for one person, with discounts available for additional passengers.

Car Rental

If you prefer the flexibility of driving yourself, major rental car companies operate from both the Domestic and International Terminals. Check on parking fees at your accommodation in Auckland, and book in advance - I compare prices using DiscoverCars or Expedia.

Summary

Most of us will work out quickly what our needs are on arrival, particularly if you've just come off a long haul flight to Auckland.

For most of us, I recommend the SkyDrive coach service because it's affordable, leaves every 30 minutes and drives directly to Auckland city centre.

However, if you have a group, or just need to get to your hotel right now, I understand you! Take a taxi or Uber for speed and ease.
