Where to stay in Athens, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, with the hotels I'd actually book in each.

Landing at Athens International Airport after a surprisingly pleasant business class flight, I took the metro into the Syntagma Square district on a blazing hot summer day and thanked my lucky stars I'd found a well-regarded hotel in a walkable central district. Be aware: Athens is massive, and like many ancient cities that grew organically over thousands of years, it can feel overwhelming to navigate if you pick the wrong neighbourhood.
Choosing the right area in Athens isn't just about comfort, it's about making the most of your time without spending half of it stuck in traffic or trudging through a part of town after dark that you'd rather avoid.

Staying in Plaka & Monastiraki (Historic Heart)
If you want to wake up surrounded by history, Plaka is Athens' most atmospheric neighbourhood. This is the part of the city where narrow cobblestone streets lead between neoclassical buildings, and you're never more than a stone's throw from the major ancient sites.
The area around Plaka feels almost village-like despite being in the city centre, while Monastiraki has more of an organised chaos with its famous flea market and busy squares. Choose here and you'll be within easy walking distance of the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and some of Athens' best traditional restaurants.
For traditional Greek atmosphere nearby, Daphne's serves recognisable Mediterranean dishes amid Pompeian frescoes, while Platanos Taverna has been doing classic Greek fare on a peaceful square since 1932.
Staying in Syntagma Square & Central Athens (Prime Location)
Syntagma Square is where everything converges in Athens. This is the area I chose on my last visit, and it made exploring the city so much easier. You're right at the crossroads of the metro system (which makes airport transfers simple), surrounded by excellent restaurants for every budget, and close enough to the major sites to walk, but far enough from the tourist chaos to get some peace in the evenings.
Around Syntagma the variety is endless, from Okio (Michelin-recommended Mediterranean-Asian fusion just off the square) to Tzitzikas & Mermigas on Mitropoleos Street, which locals love for traditional Greek dishes with a modern twist. Prefer to feel at home? There's also a good selection of private vacation homes and apartments, some in restored neoclassical buildings.
Staying in Psyrri & Gazi (Contemporary Athens)
If you want to experience Athens as young Athenians do, head to Psyrri or neighbouring Gazi. These formerly industrial areas have become the city's creative quarters, filled with street art, independent bars, and some genuinely interesting restaurants. It's a short metro ride or pleasant walk to the major sites, but in the evenings you'll be in the thick of modern Athens. Perfect if you prefer discovering local haunts over tourist restaurants.
Psyrri is where Athens' food scene gets exciting. Nikitas serves beloved traditional Greek dishes (a local favourite for years), while Zampano offers modern Greek bistro fare with an excellent wine list in a beautifully restored neoclassical building.
Staying in Piraeus (Cruise Port & Local Flavour)
Mostly overlooked by tourists, Piraeus offers a completely different Athens experience. As Greece's main port, it has an authentic, working-city atmosphere that many visitors never see. It's incredibly convenient if you're taking ferries to the islands or arriving by cruise ship, and it's connected to central Athens by metro (about 20 minutes), so you can still explore the main sites easily.
Piraeus has excellent seafood along the marina. Margaro is a beloved local institution serving simple, perfectly fried fish since 1944, while Varoulko Seaside offers Michelin-starred modern Greek seafood with stunning harbour views.
