Vatican Opening Hours 2026: Museums, Basilica, Dome & Gardens

Vatican Museums

Standard hours: 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM (last entry 5:00 PM)

Friday evenings (May-October): 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM (last entry 6:00 PM). These evening sessions offer thinner crowds and are the best time to visit the museums.

April extended hours: Fridays and Saturdays open until 10:30 PM (last entry 8:30 PM).

Closed: Every Sunday except the free last Sunday of each month (9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, last entry 12:30 PM).

Annual closures: 1 January, 6 January, 11 February (Lateran Treaty anniversary), 19 March (St. Joseph's Day), Easter Monday, 1 May, 29 June (Saints Peter and Paul), 14-15 August (Assumption/Ferragosto), 1 November (All Saints), 8 December (Immaculate Conception), 25-26 December.

St. Peter's Basilica

October to March: 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM (last entry 6:00 PM)

April to September: 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM (last entry 6:30 PM)

Cost: Free. Always free. No ticket needed.

Wednesday mornings: Partially closed or restricted access until approximately 12:00 PM due to Papal Audiences in St. Peter's Square.

Other closures: The basilica closes at short notice for papal ceremonies, canonisations, and special liturgical events. Check basilicasanpietro.va the day before your visit.

Best arrival time: 7:00 AM. Security takes under 10 minutes and you will have the nave almost to yourself. By 9:30 AM, queues stretch across the square. After 3:00 PM is the second-best window. See my St. Peter's Basilica guide for full details.

Dome Climb

October to March: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

April to September: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Cost: EUR6 (full climb, 551 steps) or EUR8-10 (lift to first terrace, then 320 steps).

Queue: Minimal at 8:00 AM. Builds to 30-90 minutes by 10:00 AM. Separate entrance to the right of the basilica facade.

Vatican Grottoes

Hours: Open when the basilica is open. Free entry via staircase inside the basilica.

Time needed: 20-30 minutes.

Note: The exit is outside the basilica, not inside. Once you leave the Grottoes, you are outside the security perimeter and would need to re-queue to re-enter the basilica. Visit the Grottoes last.

Vatican Gardens

Guided tours only. No independent access.

Schedule: Reduced in winter; fuller schedule April-October. Check museivaticani.va for available slots.

Cost: EUR33 (includes skip-the-line Museums access). Bus tour format with multilingual audio guide.

Booking: At least 3 weeks ahead. Slots are limited to roughly 250 visitors per day.

Papal Audiences and Mass

Wednesday Papal Audience: Begins 11:00 AM (Pope's vehicle passes from ~8:45 AM). Free tickets via vatican.va. See my papal audience guide.

Sunday Angelus: 12:00 PM, no ticket needed. Pope appears at window overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Daily Mass (St. Peter's): Multiple times from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No ticket needed. See my papal audience and Mass guide for the full schedule.

The times that actually matter

The official hours tell you when things are open. These times tell you when to actually go:

7:00 AM - Arrive at St. Peter's Basilica. Security in under 10 minutes. Near-empty nave.

7:45 AM - Arrive at Vatican Museums entrance for 8:00 AM timed slot. Security starts 7:50 AM.

Before 9:30 AM - The Sistine Chapel is still manageable. After this, it becomes standing-room only.

After 3:00 PM - Basilica security queues drop by half. Second-best window after early morning.

After 4:00 PM (winter) - Museums are nearly empty. The final hour feels almost private.

5:00-6:00 PM (May-Oct Fridays) - Friday evening museum entry. Thinner crowds, different atmosphere.
