Oryx Lounge Review at Doha International Airport: Is It Worth Paying For?
A Qatar Airways upgrade does not always include lounge access at Doha. What the paid Oryx Lounge costs, what you get, and whether to bother.
If you're transiting through Hamad International Airport in Doha and flying business class on a Qatar Airways upgrade, you might be surprised to learn that lounge access isn't automatically included.
That's how I found myself paying to access the Oryx Lounge, one of several paid options at this otherwise slick airport.
Here's what I discovered - and what I wish I'd known before paying the fee.
Lounge Access Is Not Included with a Business Class Upgrade
One of the most frustrating aspects of flying Qatar Airways with a business class upgrade is that lounge access isn't part of the package. Unless you're paying full fare for business or first class, you'll need to book lounge access separately - ideally in advance as it's usually cheaper.
In my case, I had to pay at the door. That's how I ended up in the Oryx Lounge Doha, one of a few options available to cash-paying passengers.
Paid Lounge Options at Doha International Airport
Hamad International offers multiple paid lounge experiences. Here's a quick price comparison based on rates at the time of my visit:

While I chose Oryx, the Al Mourjan Business Lounge might offer better value if you're prepared to spend more.
There can be restrictions on entering the Al Mourjan and Al Safwa lounges as a paying customer, so don't assume you'll get in on the day.
The Hotel Alternative
When I posted my video review of the Oryx Lounge, a couple of my subscribers said they preferred to book into the Oryx Airport Hotel, which is INSIDE Doha International Airport. This could work if you have a few hours to kill before your flight or if you have a long layover.
I tried to book this on a separate visit to Doha but foolishly left it until the last minute and couldn't get availability. It might be worth you trying it (click here for details).
Inside the Oryx Lounge: What to Expect
Seating & Workspaces
The Oryx Lounge offers a mix of seating including dining tables, loungers, and quiet zones. I picked a table so I could work while grabbing a bite. There's also a small games area, a sharing working desk in a conference room and bathroom facilities.
Food and Drinks
This is where expectations need to be managed. The food selection is basic - small salads, snacky items, and one hot dish if you're lucky. The drinks are self-service with a minimal alcohol offering (think: one red, one white wine).
If you're after luxury food or premium drinks, this isn't the place. It's functional, not fancy.
Service & Atmosphere
Don't expect much staff interaction. There were two people: one refilling food, the other clearing tables. Security is present. That's it. During my 5-hour stay, the lounge got crowded and loud - especially near the end.
Final Thoughts: Should You Book the Oryx Lounge?
If you've got a long layover and don't mind paying for a bit of peace, it might be worth considering. Just set your expectations low.
For those who want a more premium experience, go straight for the Al Mourjan Lounge - especially if fast Wi-Fi and better dining are important to you.
