Route Overview

The corridor route: Montreal Gare Centrale to Quebec City Gare du Palais via Drummondville.

The VIA Rail corridor between Montreal and Quebec City covers 270 kilometres through inland Quebec, connecting two of the country's most-visited cities in just over three hours - city centre to city centre, no car needed.

VIA Rail runs 34 departures per week, with trains leaving from Gare Centrale in downtown Montreal (one of my favourite stations in Canada) from early morning through to the evening. Most services call at Drummondville roughly halfway through the journey. The route crosses the St. Lawrence River on the final approach into Quebec City. Gare du Palais sits below the cliffs of the old city - one of the more dramatic train arrivals in Canada.

Two classes are available on every departure. Economy covers the basics well - reclining seats, WiFi, and power at every seat. Business adds a full meal, Canadian beer and wine, and two checked bags. Both share the same train and the same track.

Escape fares - VIA Rail's cheapest tier - start from around CAD $43 booked on viarail.ca. These are non-refundable and available only online or on the VIA Rail app. Walk-up prices at the station desk are higher.

What the Journey is Actually Like

Leaving Gare Centrale, the train crosses to the south shore of the St. Lawrence and picks up speed through flat agricultural land east of Montreal. The first 90 minutes are understated - open skies, productive farmland, small Quebec towns and the occasional river visible alongside the tracks.

Drummondville, roughly halfway, sits on the Saint-Francois River. It is a workaday city with no particular tourist draw, but the stop is brief and the platform provides a few minutes to stretch. After Drummondville, the character of the landscape stays broadly the same - pastoral Quebec, the kind of country that looks good from a train window.

The journey's payoff comes at the end. The train crosses the St. Lawrence River on the final approach - the cliffs of Cap Diamant rise ahead with the old city on top. Gare du Palais arrives with its 1915 chateau facade intact. Old Quebec is a 10-minute walk uphill from the station entrance.

From Quebec City

Gare du Palais sits at the base of Quebec City's lower town. The walls and cobbled streets of Vieux-Quebec are a 10-minute walk uphill from the station - no taxi required, no transit card needed. The station building's 1915 chateau facade is one of the more handsome railway buildings in Canada, and worth a pause before heading uphill.
